Mary M. Brabeck, Ph.D.

Mary M. Brabeck, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Applied Psychology and Dean Emerita of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University.  She served as dean of the NYU Steinhardt School from 2003-2014 and as dean of the Carolyn and Peter Lynch School of Education at Boston College from 1996-2003. She has published over 100 scholarly papers and book chapters on intellectual and ethical development, professional and feminist ethics, gender differences in cognition and morality and interprofessional collaboration to enhance K-12 student achievement. Dr. Brabeck was Editor-in-Chief of the Psychology of Women Quarterly, the journal of the American Psychological Association Society for Psychology of Women (2005-20019). She is a fellow of the American Educational Research Association and a fellow of American Psychological Association (APA), Divisions 7 (Developmental), 17 (Counseling Psychology), 35 (Psychology of Women), and 52 (International Psychology).

Dr. Brabeck was an elected member, vice chair (2021-22), and chair (2022-2023) of the APA Ethics Committee. She was the Inaugural Chair of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and member of the Board of Directors from 2013-2017. From 2005–2007 she was an elected member of the Board of Directors of the APA Education Directorate and was elected to APA’s Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP). From 2004–2005, she was the elected chair of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. She has served on boards and councils for organizations that include the Executive Committee of the Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions, the National Society for the Study of Education, the Holmes Partnership, the Carnegie Corporation’s Teachers for a New Era Research Review Committee, the Education Leadership Coalition of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN), the APA Board of Directors Standing Hearing Panel of the Ethics Committee, and the Bristol-Warren Education Foundation.

Dr. Brabeck’s awards and recognitions include a Doctor of Humane Letters from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia; Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota; Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota School of Education and Human Development; APA Cynthia D. Belar Education Advocacy Distinguished Service Award; and the Kuhmerker Award from the Association for Moral Education; Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Cloud University.
