Govane came to Shakespeare & Company as a stitcher, dresser and sometimes designer in 1980 with a background in sewing, handcrafts, teaching and management. She became Costume Director in 2000. Govane oversees the staffing and management of the Costume and Wardrobe Departments and is ultimately responsible for the production of costumes and overseeing how they are run and maintained for all Shakespeare & Company productions and education programs. She is a principal designer with the company as well and has designed close to 300 productions for Shakespeare & Company and others. She is immensely thankful to have been an artist/manager and fellow traveler on the Shakespeare & Company journey from the Mount to Kemble Street. She has helped establish a rental business with 43 years of costume stock supporting our productions and providing another income stream. She is most proud of being part of the inception and growth of the Fall Festival of Shakespeare celebrating 35 years this fall. She is eternally grateful for the talented leaders, staff and designers without whom her tenure would not be as rich or joyous.
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
