Andy Weinberger was raised on Long Island and went to Herricks High School. He received his B.S. from Bucknell University and then his M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine. He decided to specialize in Internal Medicine and completed his Internship and Residency at Kings County Hospital-Downstate Medical Center, then trained in the subspecialty of Rheumatology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. His training was interrupted for two years by being drafted into the USAR.
He practiced Rheumatology in Brooklyn and then in New Jersey until his retirement in 2020. He served on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter, for 23 years and was on multiple committees including the Executive Committee and the Patient Services Committee. He was twice elected President of the New Jersey Rheumatology Association and arranged daylong conferences and evening meetings. He has been active in the Essex County (NJ) Ethical Culture Society where he was the President on two occasions and has been on the Board of Directors for many terms. He and his wife, author-teacher Meredith Sue Willis, had their first date at a college production of Romeo and Juliet, and they have been attending and enjoying productions at Shakespeare & Company since its third season. Their son Joel was about 8 when he saw the 1993 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Mount and he has seen several productions since. He and his granddaughter also enjoy productions together.
