Caroline Stefanie Clay

Caroline is a proud native of Washington, D.C. and Assistant Professor of Acting & Voice at the University of Iowa, Department of Theatre Arts, where she leads the Voice for the Actor track. Clay became a Designated Linklater Voice Teacher in 2025. A 30-year veteran of Broadway, film, television, and regional theatre; she is best known for the recurring character of “CeCe the Matchmaker” on Grey’s Anatomy, Season 15, and for her award-winning role as Mrs. Muller on Broadway and National Tour of Doubt, A Parable.

As a playwright, Clay has written two solo shows, Let it Flo: The Life & Scandals of Flo Kennedy, (Off-Broadway, Cherry Lane Theatre) and Sepia Sculptress: Wildfire, Edmonia Lewis (Kennedy Center Millenium Stage.)

She is currently pursuing teacher certification in Louis Colaianni’s Phonetics & Pillow Work. As a Dialect Coach, she has worked at Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, Studio Theatre, Obsidian Theatre (Toronto), and on the film The Fire Inside, starring Ryan Destiny. Clay was recently in Havana, Cuba, where she served a voice coach for Teatro Perséfone in their production of Cymbeline. She is the recipient of two Helen Hayes Awards for Acting, an IRNE Award, and the Los Angeles NAACP Award for Best Actress (Skeleton Crew-Geffen Playhouse.) Caroline is thrilled to be returning to Shakespeare & Company, where in 2013, she took part in the January Intensive that changed her life and career.
